An invitation from Elizabeth Pask, to take part in a walking tour on August 15th 2017
This fund raising tour for St Mary’s Church on the Craven estate in Hamstead Marshall, is an invitation to walk in Jane Austen’s footsteps along routes that she would have walked. Through readings from letters and extracts from her novels, we will recreate the atmosphere of the 18th and early 19th century England that Jane knew. Through the tour we will also spot possible influences that she came to use in her novel writing.
Those who have read accounts of Jane Austen’s life will recognise the family names Lloyd, Craven, and Fowles. We will visit the home areas of these families and consider how they came to be known to the Austens.
Our tour will take approximately 3 hours, and we will visit three churches that are a part of our Walbury Beacon Benefice; St Michael and All Angels at Enborne, St Mary’s on the Craven estate in Hamstead Marshall and St Mary’s in Kintbury. While visiting the churches we will reflect upon aspects of historical and architectural interest, and think about the appearance of the church as Jane would have seen it.
Our tour starts at 1.15 pm, from outside St Michael and All Angels at Enborne. There will be short drives between churches and you will be given clear guidance.
We will walk at a leisurely pace, and will aim to keep to time; otherwise we might not arrive in time for tea at the Tutti Pole in Hungerford at 4.30. Tea will be at your own expense, and will require pre booking. So please let me know if you wish to have tea when you book your place on the tour.
A donation of not less than £20 per person is invited, that will be collected at the start of the tour. 6 places are available. Should you wish to come along, please let me know via email at dr.elizabeth.pask@gmail.com
I will confirm your booking by responding to your email, if you are successful. If you do not hear from me, please take it that a place is not available to you. Should demand from applicants be high, I may make occasion for a second tour, to fall in the same week.
